
Are you an Indian Prairie Public Library Teen going into grades 7-12? Are you looking for a fun way to earn service hours, get job experience or make a difference in the community this summer? IPPL's VolunTEENs commit to 10 hours of volunteer service during the Summer Reading Club (May 16 - August 6, 2011).
The application process has finished for the 2011 Summer VolunTEEN Program. Applications for 2012 Summer VolunTEENs will be available May 1, 2012.
Registration VolunTEEN (50 positions)
Registration Desk volunteers help register children for the summer reading program, hand out prizes and may help with preparing craft materials for upcoming programs and other projects in the Youth Services Department. Volunteers should plan on working at the library 2 hours per week. Attendance at a mandatory orientation is required for registration volunteers before any hours will be assigned. Orientations will be held on Thursday, June 2 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Saturday, June 4 from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, June 9 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Registration VolunTEENs must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours between June 12 and August 6. If you are unable to make this commitment, please consider a different volunteer opportunity.
Chess Coaches (35 positions)
Chess coaches will help experienced players improve their game, and teach new players the basics. Volunteers are expected to set up before and clean up after chess tutoring. Chess meets on Tuesdays from June 21 – Aug. 2, 2011 from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. Attendance at a mandatory orientation meeting is required. Orientations will take place on Tuesday, June 7 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. or Tuesday, June 14 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Chess Coaches must be able to commit to working a minimum of 5 sessions throughout the summer. If you are unable to make this commitment, please consider a different volunteer opportunity.
Book Buddies (10 positions)
Book Buddies are paired with elementary-grade readers to help them become better at reading aloud. Book Buddies will be scheduled on Mondays or Wednesdays from 10:15p.m. – 12:45 p.m. from June 13 to July 27. Attendance at an orientation session is mandatory. Orientations will be held on Wednesday, June 8 at 6:30 p.m. or Saturday, June 11 at 11:00 a.m.. Book Buddies must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours throughout the summer. If you are unable to make this commitment, please consider a different volunteer opportunity.
Program Assistants (7 positions)
Program Assistants will help with our family and school-aged programming.
- Family Night Program Assistants - will help with our family craft and activity programs on Mondays from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
- Chess Program Assistants -will process records for the chess program on Tuesdays from 1-3:30 p.m.
- School Age Program Assistants - will help with our craft and activity programs for 1-3 and 4-6 graders on Thursdays from 10 a.m - noon.
A mandatory orientation is required for all program assistants. Orientations will be held on Tuesday June 7 at 12:30 for Chess Assistants, Monday, June 13 at 5:30 p.m. for Family Night Assistants, and Thursday June 16 at 9:30 a.m. for School-age assistants. Program assistants must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours. If you are unable to make this commitment, please consider a different volunteer opportunity.
VolunTEEN Appreciation Party
Teens who complete the required 10 hours of service will be invited to join us for an after hours party at the library!
Additional Information about the VolunTEEN program:
- After attending one of the mandatory orientation sessions, Registration Desk VolunTEENs will be assigned hours on a first come-first serve basis.
- Book Buddies, Program Assistants and Chess Coaches assignments will be confirmed by the VolunTEEN coordinators via phone.
- Due to the limited number of positions available for certain jobs, you may be asked to choose an alternate position if your first choice has filled.
- VolunTEENs may work only the hours assigned to them.
- All requests for written recommendations or confirmation of hours completed will require one week to process.

- You are gaining valuable job experience if you do your job properly. You have the opportunity to demonstrate good attendance, dependability, creativity and interpersonal skills while you work with us.
