TELL US YOUR STORIES

Veterans History Project

If you or someone you know is a U.S. veteran, then you may be able to help Indian Prairie Public Library collect and preserve war stories and experiences as a part of the Veterans History Project.

On October 27, 2000, Public Law 106-380 was passed which called upon the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., to collect and preserve oral histories of America's war veterans.

Indian Prairie became involved in the project in 2001 when local resident Marty Thomas volunteered to conduct the interviews, which usually last about two hours. The original recording will be sent to the American Folklife Center while a copy will be kept in a special collection at the Indian Prairie Public Library.

Indian Prairie Library began by interviewing mainly World War II veterans. However, the library would now like to hear stories from veterans of all wars. In addition, we are interested in the stories of U.S. civilians who were actively involved in supporting war efforts (such as war industry workers, USO workers, flight instructors, medical volunteers, etc.).

If you are interested in more information, please contact Joe Popowitch, Reference Librarian, at 630/887-8760 ext. 240.
