Armstrong, Ron

"They'd have a target at 200 yards and you had to be able to hit the target so many times. Whatever you did, you got a rating for – like sharpshooter. I was a sharpshooter for the M14. That's what we learned in Ft. Campbell. At Ft. Polk we had M16's that they were just issuing to everybody. I qualified with that as a sharpshooter also. There, they talk you how to shoot the M16 machine gun. You got a little bit of experience, also, with the .50 caliber machine gun. I think it was called the M1 .50 caliber machine gun. And, like the LAW, you got to fire it there."

Bastian, Benton

"Shortly thereafter the war ended. A guy came into the tent one day and said they were looking for volunteers to go to the Pacific. So I and another guy raised our hands. The other guy didn‟t get to go because he had been there longer in Italy than me. So I got to go to the Pacific. So we loaded on a ship again. The day we left Leghorn, Italy the first atom bomb dropped. And then, before you know it we're a little way out in the ocean and the second bomb was dropped. They announced over the loudspeaker that we weren‟t going to the Pacific, we were going to New York. And I was madder than a wet hen."

Bogigian, Harold

"Most of the personnel on there were gunner's mates. And they were assigned to man the guns that they had installed on these merchant ships. There was an officer and a group of gunmen, and one radio operator. And they had a signalman assigned to the ship. That was my first real assignment."
