Artist

Jenn's Weekly Progression

Jenn Weinshenker is a local artist, will be painting a work of art on location at the library this summer.

You may have seen Jenn in the library with her Akita service dog, Coco. Each year Jenn donates paintings to organizations that contribute to their community and plans on donating this painting to the library. Jenn is also a poet and the author of Down the Road, a poetic telling of how she is able to live purposefully after a serious car accident left her with a traumatic brain injury.

See Jenn paint in the second floor gallery on Tuesdays 2–4 p.m. and Fridays 4–6 p.m. in June and July. You can view Jenn's artwork and read her writings at chicagostudioworks.com.

Questions we asked Jenn Weinshenker,

What is your inspiration for this painting?

I wanted it to be colorful, something fun for kids, teenagers, and adults, and be surprising. I wanted to give kids something to talk about with parents that they see is very fun.

When did you know you wanted to be a painter?

I grew up in a house with a lot of original artwork. My appreciation started really early as a child. I remember my first piece when I was 5! I remember making a mural using every color crayon I had. It's like a great love affair. It drives me crazy and makes me happy.

What questions do you always get asked when you come in to paint?

Are those birds? I tell everyone right now I am painting birds in the sky. I will be working on the prairie next as well as a special surprise at the end.

Why did you partner with Indian Prairie Public Library?

Every year for a very long time, I would give a painting away to an organization that does really good work and probably didn't have it in their budget to have an original piece of artwork. I figured they should be inspired because they do stuff that inspires people all the time.

Local History Interviews

Indian Prairie Public Library is interviewing long-time residents of the community. These shared experiences reveal the diversity of ages, cultures, and backgrounds of the members of the community and allow people to feel connected to one another. The stories also create a picture of what life is like today and how it has changed and is continuing to change. Future generations will be able to view these interviews and gain an understanding of how the community has evolved.

If you or someone you know would like to be interviewed, please contact Joe Popowitch, Reference Librarian, at 630/887-8760 ext. 240.

"Shortly thereafter the war ended. A guy came into the tent one day and said they were looking for volunteers to go to the Pacific. So I and another guy raised our hands. The other guy didn‟t get to go because he had been there longer in Italy than me. So I got to go to the Pacific. So we loaded on a ship again. The day we left Leghorn, Italy the first atom bomb dropped. And then, before you know it we're a little way out in the ocean and the second bomb was dropped. They announced over the loudspeaker that we weren‟t going to the Pacific, we were going to New York. And I was madder than a wet hen."
